The Challenge
Avnet, a leading technology manufacturer and distributor, faced a significant challenge due to its evolving business needs and the need to integrate multiple applications running on various platforms. The company had made over seventy acquisitions in the past 20 years, which further complicated their IT infrastructure. The high-cost integration infrastructure consisted of thousands of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) maps to stage, data to replicate, which created latency problems, as well as thousands of services to support. IT needed to become more agile and assure high-quality integration while lowering the cost of development for the business.
About The Customer
Avnet is a Fortune's Most Admired for Technology Distribution company for the past four years. The company connects the world's leading technology manufacturers with more than 100,000 customers. As one of the largest distributors of electronic components, connectors, semiconductors, technology solutions, computer products, and embedded technology, Avnet plays a crucial role in the global technology supply chain. The company has more than 17,000 employees across 300+ locations in more than 70 countries. In 2012, Avnet reported an annual revenue of $25.7 billion.
The Solution
Avnet achieved its IT transformation by adopting a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to speed up development, increase agility, and significantly lower costs. At the heart of the SOA, a webMethods Integration suite supports all of Avnet’s application integration and B2B transactions while webMethods Broker facilitates the exchange of millions of messages daily. For governance, Avnet uses Software AG’s CentraSite, a single repository for developers to publish assets and documentation for re-use. webMethods Mediator provides end-to-end governance, including services life-cycle management.
Operational Impact
  • Avnet expects to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in development, hardware, and license costs, in addition to accelerating integration during acquisitions.
  • Development time is 60 percent faster, thanks to re-using assets and repeatable processes.
  • Real-time integration, instead of a 15-minute latency, is the new norm.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Development time is 60 percent faster.
  • Real-time integration, instead of a 15-minute latency.
