The Challenge
MPWiK S.A., a major water company in Poland, aimed to improve productivity across all operational areas while maintaining the quality of its core services. The company also sought to introduce a management system based on business processes that could be independently audited through formal certification, including ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environment management, and ISO 18001 for workplace safety. In 2010, MPWiK S.A. initiated a process transformation program to enhance productivity and transparency. Information technology was identified as a key factor in the success of this initiative, enabling the company to reorganize and introduce measurable and repeatable processes. This led to improvements in all core operational areas such as water production, network service and maintenance, and water leakage reduction.
About The Customer
Wrocław’s MPWiK S.A. is among the largest municipal water companies in Poland and among the oldest as well. With annual revenue at PLN 372 million (2015) and 700 employees, the company provides water to about 700,000 people in and around the city of Wrocław. Over the past five years, MPWiK S.A. has implemented numerous efficiency programs improving all critical operational KPIs while reducing cost and minimizing water leakage. In 2010, the company started a process transformation program aimed at improving productivity and transparency. Information technology turned out to be key to the initiative’s success, enabling the company to reorganize and introduce measurable and repeatable processes.
The Solution
The company used the ARIS and webMethods platforms to map and automate their processes. About 120 detailed process maps were produced, which were then modeled with the ARIS platform. This was key to automating them later with the webMethods BPMS platform. The company also standardized data interchange between its systems using a universal integration platform built with the webMethods BPMS platform. Part of this project was also preparing a canonical data model covering all important business terms and data sources. Process automation, task coordination, improved planning, and easy access to information stored in various business systems helped MPWiK S.A. identify cost reduction potential.
