New Relic's Full-Stack Observability Enhanced by Fastly's High-Level Data Availability

Technology Category
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS) - Application Development Platforms
Applicable Industries
  • Cement
Use Cases
  • Real-Time Location System (RTLS)
  • Traffic Monitoring
The Challenge
New Relic, an observability platform, was in need of a partner that could scale with them and ensure high-level data availability, scalability, and performance. The company's core data platform ingests data from around the world and makes it available in near real-time. The availability of this data is crucial for New Relic's customers, as they rely on it for important functions such as alerting and monitoring. If the data doesn't reach New Relic's systems, these functions won't trigger or appear, causing significant issues for their customers. New Relic was also looking to improve performance and was in search of a partner that could provide a service that was performant, scalable, and reliable.
About The Customer
New Relic is an observability platform that provides customers with the ability to understand where their systems are at all times, and to make educated decisions based on data, not opinion. The company's core data platform ingests data from around the world and makes it available in near real-time. New Relic's customers are located around the world and rely on the availability of their data for important functions such as alerting and monitoring. The company prides itself on its growth, technical challenges, partnerships, and the engineering organization it leads.
The Solution
New Relic chose to partner with Fastly due to their high-level availability and performance. Fastly's points of presence (PoPs) are located in key areas where New Relic ingests requests from their customers, making them an ideal partner. Fastly was able to match the performance and reliability that New Relic needed, as evidenced by intense testing during the vetting process. Fastly also provided a solution to some technical challenges New Relic was facing, with a feature called 'bring your own IP' (BYOIP). Looking forward, New Relic plans to utilize Fastly's Compute@Edge for routing through-data to specific data centers and clouds around the world, with more projects in the works that Compute@Edge will enable.
Operational Impact
  • The partnership with Fastly has been beneficial for New Relic in several ways. Fastly's high-level availability and performance have ensured that New Relic's customers' data arrives without a glitch, which is crucial for the functioning of their systems. Fastly's PoPs being located in key areas where New Relic ingests requests from their customers has also been advantageous. The intense testing during the vetting process showed that Fastly could match the performance and reliability that New Relic needed. Furthermore, Fastly's solution to the technical challenges New Relic was facing, with the BYOIP feature, has been key to their operations. The partnership with Fastly has been described as 'wonderful' and 'amazing' by New Relic's Vice President of Engineering, Andrew Hartnett.
