The Challenge
Nodejitsu, a premier Node.js platform as a service provider, was looking for a cloud infrastructure provider that could offer deep knowledge of Node.js, easy account management, better performance, and high reliability. They wanted to offer the highest levels of performance to its clients and needed a cloud provider that could support their infrastructure-agnostic service that automatically scales to support the needs of applications. They also wanted to avoid the hassle of managing multiple hosting accounts once they exceed a certain number of servers.
About The Customer
Nodejitsu is a provider of a premier Node.js platform as a service offering. The company has built its hosting platform from the ground up using Node.js, a runtime language of which Joyent is the corporate steward. This allows developers to pre-configure or customize Nodejitsu for any scenario of Node.js application deployment. Nodejitsu’s platform is also designed to work with the latest versions of technologies such as WebSocket, SPDY, and socket.io. The company is headquartered in Manhattan, but its employees work in seven countries on four continents.
The Solution
Nodejitsu chose to work with Joyent, a cloud provider that offers Joyent SmartOS, a highly advanced operating system that provides superior visibility, multi-tenancy, storage, performance, and security for developers. The Joyent Cloud reduced the time Nodejitsu needed to provision a server from as long as 10 minutes to as little as 30 seconds. Joyent SmartOS offers both hardware and OS virtualization, providing more speed and scalability than Linux. Joyent also allots CPU cycles in terms of “zones” of RAM, and allows these zones to burst beyond their usual limits during times of peak demand. Joyent’s DTrace tool lets Nodejitsu monitor its servers to make sure they’re meeting the company’s scaling criteria.
Operational Impact
  • The amount of time Nodejitsu needed to provision a server decreased drastically – from as long as 10 minutes to as little as 30 seconds.
  • Joyent SmartOS provided more speed and scalability than Linux.
  • Joyent's DTrace tool provided deep visibility into Nodejitsu's servers, helping them meet their scaling criteria.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Provisioning a server time reduced from 10 minutes to 30 seconds.
