The Challenge
OSRAM, a leading global lighting manufacturer, maintains more than 45 websites in 38 languages, including a SAP-integrated sales extranet, MyOsram.com. The company required a solution to ensure continuous, high-speed Internet access for their partners, resellers, and customers to successfully drive and increase revenue. The company’s employees are connected via a worldwide Wide Area Network (WAN), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, and several Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). MyOsram.com, a fully SAP-integrated sales extranet, provides OSRAM customers with the ability to place expedited orders around the clock. Uninterrupted Internet and application access are critical to the company’s day-to-day operations. However, achieving network consistency has been a challenge for OSRAM.
About The Customer
OSRAM is a leading global lighting manufacturer headquartered in Munich. The company achieved sales of 4.6 billion Euros in the year ending September 30, 2006, with 88 percent of the sales coming from outside Germany. This global player employs more than 40,000 people worldwide, supplies customers in some 150 countries, and has 49 production facilities in 18 countries. The company’s employees are connected via a worldwide Wide Area Network (WAN), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, and several Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). MyOsram.com, a fully SAP-integrated sales extranet, provides OSRAM customers with the ability to place expedited orders around the clock.
The Solution
OSRAM’s IT team decided to upgrade the company’s network with Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs) to balance fluctuating loads, report network errors, redirect data streams where necessary, and enhance network security. Radware’s solution was chosen for its features, particularly DNS load-balancing and health checks. Radware’s solution pack included six ADCs for global failover and redundancy over two data centers, accelerated SAP response time, and enhanced protection against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. In addition, four LinkProofs, for Internet link load balancing at two central hubs in Europe and Asia, were installed to ensure reliable and cost-effective employee Internet connectivity to distributed applications across all remote subsidiaries. The installation ran exactly according to plan and was able to carry out the actual integration in just two hours.
Operational Impact
  • Radware’s solution allows OSRAM’s worldwide employees to stay connected via the OSRAM’s WAN and VPN.
  • OSRAM customers can place orders around the clock via MyOsram.com with uninterrupted Internet and application access, both critical to the company’s day-to-day operations.
  • Radware’s intelligent application delivery solution, facilitates the management of OSRAM’s entire network, automatically optimizing bandwidth so that there are no bottlenecks, even when the network is running at full capacity.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 99.999% application uptime achieved with Radware’s technology.
