Progress Residential®, one of the largest providers of high-quality, single-family rental homes in the U.S., faced several challenges related to the security and availability of Exchange Online. The company needed to detect rogue actors before a data breach could occur and ensure readiness for Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) audits in a timely manner. The challenge was to maintain the security of their Exchange Online system, detect any suspicious activities, and prepare for audits faster. The company needed a solution that could provide clear insights into activity across Exchange Online, such as changes to user properties, group permissions, server rules, and mailbox access attempts.

The Solution
Progress Residential® chose Netwrix Auditor for its ease of use, intuitive interface, and broad coverage of systems. The platform's reporting capabilities were found to be extremely useful. Netwrix Auditor provided visibility into Exchange Online, enabling the detection of changes to user properties, group permissions, server rules, and mailbox access attempts. The solution also alerted the company to any suspicious activities, such as an external actor gaining access to a mailbox and changing the rules to delete all email replies. Netwrix Auditor's User Behavior and Blind Spot Analysis reports were particularly valuable, enabling the detection of trends in failed activity and signs of account compromise or insider misuse. The software also alerted the company to mass data removals and file modifications, which could indicate a ransomware attack in progress. Additionally, Netwrix Auditor automated the monitoring of the IT environment and provided unbiased information for successful OCC compliance.
