The Challenge
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Trust, one of the largest specialist heart and chest hospitals in the UK, was looking to improve its Patient Level Costing system and introduce a flexible, easy-to-use Service Line Reporting system. The Trust wanted a system that would enable information to be shared across the whole organisation. They needed a system that could pull together millions of records of data from disparate sources and display it in an easy-to-understand visual dashboard. The system also needed to be easy to navigate and use, a key factor for busy hospital staff.
About The Customer
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Trust was formed in April 1991, as part of the first wave of NHS Trusts. Since that time, the Trust has developed into one of the largest specialist heart and chest hospitals in the UK, establishing itself along the way as a renowned provider of cardiothoracic services. The Trust provides specialist services across the North West of England, including North Wales and the Isle of Man. There are five areas of clinical expertise: Cardiac surgery, Thoracic surgery, Cardiology, Respiratory medicine, and Upper Gastrointestinal surgery.
The Solution
In 2008, the Trust implemented QlikView to improve its Patient Level Costing system with more flexible and effective analysis. It was also used to set up a Service Line Reporting system – enabling information to be shared across the whole organisation. QlikView is capable of pulling together millions of records of data from disparate sources and displaying it in an easy-to-understand visual dashboard. The in-memory technology offered the intelligence and analysis vital to support improved efficiency, yet required virtually no training to navigate and use. Due to its success, the QlikView Business Intelligence solution has been rolled out across other Trust information systems to provide a single source for management data.
Operational Impact
  • QlikView is easy-to-use, flexible and requires virtually no training to navigate.
  • The system allows the ability to drill down to ward and patient level.
  • QlikView is enabling different departments to be managed more effectively.
Quantitative Benefit
  • QlikView takes 2 – 8 weeks to implement at a fraction of the cost compared to the average Business Intelligence tool which takes 17 months to deploy and fails 65 per cent of the time.
