The Challenge
CEM, the sole electric utility in Macau, is facing new challenges as it enters the IoT era. The company is developing an advanced metering interface, adopting new forms of electronic payments, and planning a network of charging stations for electric vehicles. However, these new technologies require stronger capabilities to ensure seamless integration with its back-end core and the ability to replace legacy systems. The company needed a stable, secure, multi-channel integration platform to support its future operations.
About The Customer
Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) is a public utility company with the sole concession to transmit, distribute and sell electricity in Macau, an autonomous Chinese region with a population of 700,000. Established in 1972, CEM owns power generation facilities and also imports from the China Southern Power Grid. The company has more than 255,000 customers and is part-owned by the Government of Macau along with a consortium of private investors. As Macau’s sole electric utility, CEM’s task has long been simple: generate and transmit power, distribute it to homes and businesses, and keep all systems running in case of an emergency. Yet in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) era, its operations are becoming more complex.
The Solution
CEM chose webMethods, a powerful application integration suite from Software AG, as its enterprise integration platform. Software AG had a great track record in the utilities sector in the region, especially in the electricity generation and distribution space. The company’s strong market position and long-standing relationship with the leading system integrator, Tata Consulting Services, made CEM confident that this was the partner for its enterprise integration platform. After a six-month pilot designed to help the CEM IT team validate the webMethods platform and fully embrace its integration capabilities, CEM is now diving head on into its IoT-enabled future. The company is implementing its advanced metering pilot initiative, which will bring intelligent metering devices to 2,000 Macau homes and businesses—and eventually scale up to more than 200,000 customers.
Operational Impact
  • Integrated new best-in-class front-end applications
  • Enabled the technology behind new business initiatives, such as the Advanced Metering System and Electronic Vehicles
  • Faster time to market for projects with shorter integration development lifecycles
