The Challenge
Recently, while reassessing long-time client Hiestand & Co’s backup and disaster recovery (BDR) solutions, Computer Rescue 911 noticed the firm’s Windows Server Backup was intermittently failing. Hiestand & Co is a certified public accountant (CPA) firm, so avoiding downtime, especially during tax season, is critical. Recognizing the potential downtime costs from failed data backups, Computer Rescue 911 recommended they implement Datto’s solution. On the same day that Hiestand & Co gave them the go ahead to install a Datto SIRIS, Computer Rescue 911 sent a technician to the firm to get them set up. On Wednesday of that same week, Hiestand & Co called the MSP because their server was no longer booting. The Computer Rescue 911 team determined that the failure was due to a bad RAID array. Luckily, they had already taken a proactive approach by updating Hiestand & Co’s BDR solution just days beforehand.
About The Customer
Hiestand & Co is a certified public accountant (CPA) firm that has been a long-time client of Computer Rescue 911. The firm is highly dependent on its IT infrastructure, especially during tax season, when any downtime can be catastrophic. Hiestand & Co relies on its systems to access tax programs, databases from previous years, and current tax returns. The firm has been working with Computer Rescue 911 since 2010 for its business continuity needs, and the relationship has been positive, with a focus on server application maintenance to avoid any unwelcome downtime.
The Solution
Computer Rescue 911 recommended and implemented Datto’s solution for Hiestand & Co. On the same day that Hiestand & Co approved the installation of a Datto SIRIS, Computer Rescue 911 sent a technician to set it up. When the server failed due to a bad RAID array, the MSP used Datto’s Instant Virtualization technology to boot an image of the CPA firm’s server and run the company off of the SIRIS device. For the next eight days, Hiestand & Co operated as usual while Computer Rescue 911 ordered new parts, rebuilt the server, and performed a bare metal restore with Datto’s technical support. Datto’s support team was on the phone with Computer Rescue 911 throughout the process, ensuring a smooth restoration.
Operational Impact
  • Hiestand & Co experienced no significant downtime during the server failure, thanks to the proactive implementation of Datto’s solution.
  • The firm was able to continue its operations seamlessly for eight days while the server was being rebuilt.
  • Computer Rescue 911 provided continuous support and maintenance, ensuring that Hiestand & Co’s IT infrastructure remained robust and reliable.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Hiestand & Co was able to get up and running on the Datto device in under an hour.
  • The bare metal restore process took approximately eight to nine hours with Datto’s support.
