The Challenge
Sibley Heart Center Cardiology, one of the largest pediatric cardiology practices in the U.S., was facing challenges in managing and analyzing its vast database of patient records. The practice was considering hiring an additional full-time person to handle reporting requests for its leadership team. Standard end-of-month reporting took a few days, while ad hoc requests from senior management and physicians took up to a week or more to fulfill. The reports and hard-coded structure of Sibley’s systems couldn’t deliver basic analysis. A person would have to make several queries, which alone would take hours to generate, export data to Microsoft Excel and “reverse engineer” an answer. This limitation led to a situation where Sibley staff would not ask many questions due to the difficulty in obtaining data.
About The Customer
Sibley Heart Center Cardiology is one of the largest pediatric cardiology practices in the U.S. The practice manages its own finances and claims data for its 18 locations with staff privileges at 40 hospitals throughout Georgia. Sibley’s 40 physicians see more than 30,000 patients annually. The practice’s patient management system houses records for more than 250,000 patients dating back to 1990. Prior to the implementation of QlikView, the practice was considering hiring an additional full-time person to handle reporting requests for its leadership team due to the limitations of its existing systems.
The Solution
Sibley Heart Center Cardiology implemented QlikView to overcome its data management and analysis challenges. The entire patient database, containing up to 8 million lines of data, was downloaded into QlikView in 10 minutes and a pilot application was developed in one day. The solution enabled Sibley to analyze 20 years of statistical data on patient diagnoses and treatments to benchmark best practices for improved patient outcomes. The practice gained unprecedented visibility into operational data for practice management and financial data for payor reimbursements, insurer contracts, and physician compensation, helping to control costs. The implementation of QlikView eliminated the need for hiring a full-time person for analysis and reporting.
Operational Impact
  • Enabled statistical research of database containing 150,000 patient records
  • Improved practice management reporting
  • Overcame limitations of 11-year old BI tool
Quantitative Benefit
  • Queries can now be completed in minutes rather than a week
  • Eliminated the need to hire a full-time person for analysis and reporting
