The Challenge

Kinetic Vision, a Cincinnati-based design, engineering, and development firm, is a one-stop-shop for innovators looking to transform their ideas into real products. The company offers a wide range of services, including industrial design, mechanical and electrical design and engineering, hardware and software development, machine learning, visual communication media, prototyping, and sometimes even short-run production. However, finding the right tools for PCB design had been a challenge for them over the years. They needed a solution that could support the production of smart products that incorporate electronics, PCBs, and communications chipsets. The solution needed to be versatile enough to handle all of their projects, from the simplest to the most advanced.

About The Customer

Kinetic Vision is a Cincinnati-based design, engineering, and development firm that serves as a one-stop-shop for innovators. The company offers a wide range of services, including industrial design, mechanical and electrical design and engineering, hardware and software development, machine learning, visual communication media, prototyping, and sometimes even short-run production. Among their diverse client list are 50 of the Fortune 500 and 15 of the Fortune 100 companies. They specialize in transforming ideas into real products, and they work on projects ranging from the simplest to the most advanced.

The Solution

Kinetic Vision found their solution in Altium Designer, a PCB design tool that met all their needs. The software's 3D visualization, multi-user collaboration, and export standardization features were essential for their work. It also had features like Flex and Rigid Flex design, which were needed for more advanced PCB boards. In January 2020, Kinetic Vision moved over to the cloud-based Altium 365. This platform provided a more stable platform for their data and collaboration methods compared to the local methods they were using. The switch to Altium 365 proved to be even more beneficial when the COVID-19 crisis began, as it allowed their team members to continue working remotely. Altium Designer and Altium 365 gave their diverse team all the tools they needed while empowering effortless workflow across multiple departments.

Operational Impact
  • The adoption of Altium Designer and Altium 365 has significantly improved Kinetic Vision's process flow. The software's ECAD-MCAD collaboration tools have been a game changer for the company, enabling seamless collaboration across multiple engineering teams and platforms. The 3D visualization tools have also proved invaluable when integrating with other teams. The systems they used previously required them to spend extra time and effort to visually align the components as they moved from mechanical to electronic CAD. With Altium 365, they now have a true experiential vision for workflow. The software is now in use across the company, being used by firmware developers, system engineers, project managers and mechanical engineers as a viewer/markup tool for hardware designs.
