About The Customer
Somic Group is an innovative machine builder that operates in the competitive packaging market. They strive to meet the market's demand for intelligent, innovative, and smarter machines by building compact, high-performance solutions. Their customers prioritize reliability, production security, and high availability in machines, and Somic aims to deliver these features while also incorporating preventive maintenance with an augmented reality interface. They are committed to reducing costs, improving their service business, and reacting quickly to customer requirements.
The Solution
Somic Group turned to Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure™ Machine solutions to build their high-performance coffee capsule packaging machine. They designed and engineered the machine using a digital twin, which simulated the machine's real performance, allowing them to work virtually for added flexibility. The machine was equipped with 76 motion axes and was controlled by a smart Schneider Electric controller. For safe and speedy machine diagnosis and maintenance, Somic used EcoStruxure™ Augmented Operator Advisor, an augmented reality application that enabled operators to open the machine's cabinet doors virtually, using a mobile tool. This allowed them to identify and resolve issues without having to physically work on dangerous machines.
Operational Impact
  • The integration of Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure™ Machine solutions resulted in a high-performance coffee capsule packaging machine that was half the size and had double the output. It became the most compact and fastest machine of its kind, able to process 1,400 coffee capsules—or 140 cartons—per minute. The machine offered 40% energy management savings and the highest output on a minimal footprint. It also provided best-in-class maintenance and continuous optimisation during operation. The use of augmented reality technology helped reduce downtime and improve service by providing operators with fast, immediate access to real-time data, manuals, and diagrams, speeding up machine operation and maintenance.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 2x the output in ½ the space
  • 40% energy management savings
  • 1,400 coffee capsules — or 140 cartons — processed in 60 seconds
