The Challenge
St. Luke’s Hospital, a 300-bed facility in Toledo, OH, faced significant challenges in managing their PAR inventory after a divestiture. Transitioning from an on-premise solution to Oracle SCM Cloud, they needed a robust system to scan barcodes using handheld devices, eliminating paper processes in their PAR management. The hospital required a solution that could handle offline PAR counting to ensure accurate inventory management despite potential WIFI coverage issues. Additionally, they needed to manage 52 unique PAR locations efficiently with fewer staff, ensuring sufficient inventory levels and proper tracking for the accounting department.
About The Customer
St. Luke’s Hospital is a 300-bed healthcare facility located in Toledo, Ohio. The hospital serves the local community with a wide range of medical services and has recently undergone a restructuring process under new leadership. Following a divestiture, St. Luke’s sought to enhance its supply chain operations by transitioning from an on-premise solution to Oracle SCM Cloud. The hospital aimed to leverage the advancements of a cloud-based ERP system to improve efficiency, accuracy, and ease-of-use in their PAR inventory management. With a focus on eliminating paper processes and enhancing barcode scanning capabilities, St. Luke’s turned to RF-SMART to meet their needs.
The Solution
St. Luke’s Hospital implemented RF-SMART to complement their Oracle SCM Cloud system, focusing on mobile materials management, mobile PAR offline counting, and overall PAR location management. RF-SMART enabled the hospital to streamline their inventory processes from receiving to putaway, ensuring efficient operations and accurate inventory levels. The solution allowed for seamless creation of pick tickets, order completion, and expense tracking to the proper PAR locations. By using handheld devices for barcode scanning, St. Luke’s could issue items from the storeroom to PAR locations quickly, maintaining sufficient inventory levels and proper accounting tracking. The offline PAR counting feature was particularly beneficial, allowing data to be downloaded to devices and uploaded later to Oracle SCM Cloud, ensuring accuracy even in areas with poor WIFI coverage. Additionally, RF-SMART supported the hospital’s use of KANBAN for a two-bin method to place orders, enabling technicians to locate items across different PAR locations efficiently.
Operational Impact
  • RF-SMART enabled St. Luke’s Hospital to manage 52 unique PAR locations with fewer staff, significantly improving operational efficiency.
  • The offline PAR counting feature ensured accurate inventory management even in areas with poor WIFI coverage, enhancing reliability.
  • The use of handheld devices for barcode scanning eliminated paper processes and manual data entry, reducing errors and saving time.
Quantitative Benefit
  • St. Luke’s Hospital managed 52 unique PAR locations with fewer headcount, reducing labor costs.
  • The implementation of RF-SMART eliminated the need for double or triple the amount of workers to fill carts and place orders.
  • The offline PAR counting feature ensured accurate inventory management, reducing potential inventory discrepancies.
