The Challenge
Ramboll, a Danish engineering, architecture, design, and consultancy firm, faced challenges in standardizing IT policies and procedures across its global offices due to its growth through mergers and acquisitions. The company had a high number of applications in use, with each country handling access privileges and admin rights differently. This resulted in an overburdened local IT team and a lack of visibility and control at the global level. The company also faced cybersecurity threats and needed to manage software licenses effectively. The challenge was to find a solution that would not only bolster and standardize application control and privileged management across the organization but also ensure license compliance and software standardization.
About The Customer
Ramboll is a Danish engineering, architecture, design, and consultancy firm based in Copenhagen. Founded in 1945 by engineers Børge Johannes Rambøll and Johan Georg Hannemann, the company was established with an emphasis on treating their clients and employees fairly. Over the years, Ramboll has grown into a global organization through a tradition of innovation and mergers. The company now employs 16,500 people in 35 countries in Northern Europe, the UK, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. Ramboll's spheres of activity have grown to encompass transportation, urban planning, water, energy, climate and sustainability, the environment, and health.
The Solution
To address the challenges, Ramboll decided to implement BeyondTrust Privileged Access Management. The company embarked on a year-long discovery phase to integrate the platform into its everyday activities and create a full suite of policies and procedures governing its use. Before the implementation, Ramboll audited users and administrators worldwide to understand the applications in use and how they were installed. The company then created four different lists: White, black, grey, and red to manage application permissions. The company also introduced BeyondTrust’s Trusted Application Protection capability, which protects against fileless threats that use approved applications to slip by defenses. The implementation was done region by region, starting with the smaller countries, working with smaller sample sizes, finding any problems and fixing them.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of BeyondTrust Privileged Access Management has helped Ramboll streamline and standardize application control and privileged management across the entire organization.
  • The company has successfully reduced the number of apps in use from 32,000 unique apps to around 5,000 apps, significantly reducing vectors for malware and cyberattacks.
  • The company has also consolidated many of its business tools, which has further simplified the work of its IT teams.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced the number of apps in use from 32,000 unique apps to around 5,000 apps.
  • Blocked a major security threat (Zoom) in less than an hour.
