The Challenge
United Colors of Dissent (UCoD) is a data-driven performance designed for live public interaction in urban environments. The performance captures the linguistic and socio-cultural profile of different communities by creating dynamic visualizations and infographics. The audience in a public space can join the performance through a simple URL on their browser and answer questions every 30 seconds using a simple slider. Their answers are collected in a pool, and based on those answers, the results are visualized on a media facade. The challenge was to visualize the data as it gets collected and shared immediately with the audience to give them feedback throughout the performance. The creators, Orkan Telhan and Mahir Yavuz, needed real-time technology to broadcast the results of their questions onto the media facade and let everyone see each other’s answers at the same time. They also needed a solution that could handle large fluctuations in users, from small amounts to thousands of users simultaneously, and provide real-time latency no matter what city the performance was taking place in.
About The Customer
The customers in this case are Orkan Telhan and Mahir Yavuz, interdisciplinary artists who specialize in data visualization. They have been traveling around Europe performing their project, United Colors of Dissent (UCoD), a data-driven performance designed for live public interaction in urban environments.
The Solution
The solution was found in the PubNub Real-time Network, which became a core part of the project. All the messaging within the project, from asking the questions, to receiving answers, to broadcasting the visualization, was done via PubNub. The entire communication layer of the project relied on PubNub’s real-time messaging API with PubNub Data Streams. Rather than spending time and resources on building out a real-time infrastructure, Telhan and Yavuz were able to plug in PubNub and have it working as quickly as possible. This allowed them to focus more on visualizations, questions, and other elements of the art project. PubNub was also chosen for its scalability, both for geolocation and number of users. With fourteen data centers globally, PubNub was able to handle the user base, providing real-time latency no matter what city the performance was taking place in and handling large fluctuations in users.
Operational Impact
  • With PubNub, Telhan and Yavuz were able to easily build their project around the PubNub Real-time Network, and didn’t have to worry about the issues that came along with building out a real-time infrastructure on their own. Rather than building, maintaining, and orchestrating a real-time network, Telhan and Yavuz could plug into PubNub, and focus on what mattered most, their visualizations. This allowed them to focus more on the art project and less on the technology. They were able to avoid the problems associated with building a real-time infrastructure from scratch, such as global messaging and cloud distribution. The solution provided by PubNub enabled them to visualize data from all over the world in under a second.
