The Challenge
Sooki Co., Ltd., a company specializing in rentals, sales, and repairs of survey and measurement devices, was expanding its business to include 3D application services for various industries. To ensure secure use of these applications by customers from plants, offices, and research centers, Sooki needed to install a unified threat management (UTM) appliance in its data center. The company also needed to provide a low-cost, integrated gateway security system, reduce operating overhead, and provision a uniform security environment for all customer locations. Furthermore, Sooki faced the challenge of constructing a network environment that would allow the construction site, JV office, and each general contractor location to access Sooki’s Tokyo data center via the Internet and use the application. The varying PC environments and inadequate equipment at some sites posed additional challenges.
About The Customer
Sooki Co., Ltd. is a company that provides rentals, sales, and repairs of survey and measurement devices. Established in 1989, the company has a wide range of measuring equipment, from surveying equipment for civil engineering and construction using advanced measuring technologies to water quality measuring devices, noise and vibration measurement equipment, weather observation equipment, and nondestructive inspection equipment. Sooki also provides automated surveying and measuring equipment in fields where the reliability and technical prowess of the company are acclaimed. The company has recently started a new service operation providing 3D application services for various industries that use 3D measurement technologies.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Sooki installed the UTM-1 unified threat management (UTM) appliance in its data center. This installation provided a firewall, intrusion prevention, antivirus and anti-spyware protection, and an SSL VPN, all at a low cost. The small-scale UTM appliance Safe@Office 500 was also installed at each company location, improving point-to-point network security. UTM-1 enabled unified threat management for Sooki, and plans were made to roll out SSL VPN for easy access to each customer network. The goal was to create a simple, straightforward system that could defend against Internet threats such as viruses and worms. To enable secure FTP transfer via Web and application access, SSL Network Extender was also added. In addition to this SSL VPN plugin, nearly all of the security functions were being used, including firewall, intrusion prevention, antivirus, and anti-spyware.
