The Challenge

Incorporating video surveillance with SCADA/HMI systems is now a trend for automation applications. In general, the ActiveX Control component is required to embed video images in SCADA/HMI systems. In addition to installing the ActiveX Control components, programming is also required to properly facilitate video displays and control functions. Unfortunately, the kind of programming required can pose problems for automation system integrators because they are not familiar with video technology. Moxa is working with Siemens Taiwan Building Technologies (BT) Department to develop a userfriendly tool with graphical interface for Siemens DESIGO™ system, an up-to-date BA solution of freely programmable management and automation stations for the full spectrum of building services applications, to save time and effort with programming video related functions. System Requirements • Activate live video displays when an alarm is triggered at a remote site. • Remote PTZ camera control is required, including direction control and presets control. • Audio on/off functions

About The Customer
The BT Department of Siemens Taiwan
The Solution

The BT Department of Siemens Taiwan is integrating a video surveillance solution with a SCADA system, with the main purpose to activate video images from a field site camera when an alarm is triggered. The Siemens DESIGO™ building energy management system is used mainly for the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system for building automation and control. In the past, if an alarm was activated, the system integrator of HVAC system needed to go to the field site to check what had happened. By activating the field site video with the alarm, the engineer can easily view the situation from the control center and respond to the alarm quickly. The DESIGO system supports a number of different application scenarios based on the situation and requirements at the field site. This customer was looking for a tool that can be used to program and configure the video functions quickly and accurately. After conducting a detailed product survey, they chose Moxa’s VPort 351 industrial video encoder as the hardware solution, and worked with Moxa to develop a video genie for DESIGO. For this project, Moxa's VPort 351 video encoders are connected to PTZ cameras at the remote site. When an alarm is triggered by intruders or a thermometer detects an abnormally high temperature, onsite video images will be sent to the control center via Moxa's EDS-208A entry-level unmanaged Ethernet switch. The engineer then can observe the scene from the main computer and take proper action without needing to visit the site to troubleshoot an event each time the alarm is triggered, saving both time and money. Product Solutions 1. VPort 351 Industrial Video Encoder • Industrial design with -40 to 75°C operating temperature and fiber optic Ethernet port • Video stream up to 30 frames/sec at full D1 (720 x 480) resolution • Pre/post-alarm video recording function for advanced surveillance • 2-way (1 in/1 out) audio supported • VPort SDK PLUS and 4-channel video surveillance software provided free of charge 2. EDS-208A 8-port Unmanaged Ethernet Switch • Redundant dual 12/24/48 VDC, 18 to 30 VAC power inputs • IP30 aluminum housing • Rugged hardware design well suited for hazardous locations (Class I Div. 2 /ATEX Zone 2) and maritime environments (DNV/GL) • -40 to 75°C operating temperature range (T models)

Operational Impact
  • [Product Improvement - User Acceptance]
A graphical user interface replaces codes and programming, eliminating the need to learn how to program video functions.
  • [Efficiency Improvement - Deployment]
Moxa's VPort industrial video encoders support a wide range of applications, even in extreme environments. There is no need for the system integrator to use IP video devices from other manufacturers.
