The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) was facing challenges in managing costs while meeting high expectations from patients for the care they receive. The organization lacked an integrated information system, and reports were not readily available for decision-makers. In addition to serving a unique population, ANTHC needed to comply with government mandates to improve patient safety and quality performance. The organization was using Microsoft Access databases, Excel spreadsheets, and a Crystal Reports reporting system to access and analyze clinical and administrative data. However, these users had to manually extract data from a Cerner data warehouse and load it into Microsoft Excel tables for analysis. This lack of automation made it difficult to access or visualize data in a cohesive way.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) serves 166,000 Alaskan natives and is the largest, most comprehensive tribal health organization in the United States. In addition to comprehensive medical services offered at the Alaska Native Medical Center, ANTHC provides wellness programs, disease research and prevention, rural provider training, and the construction and maintenance of rural water and sanitation systems. The organization also offers secondary care, such as outpatient specialty clinics, surgery, and imaging, and inpatient care at the Alaska Native Medical Center. The organization confronts business dynamics every day in its quest to serve a widespread population scattered throughout the largest state in the U.S.

ANTHC selected Information Builders’ WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) and analytics platform to make operational data available to managers and executives via a new analytics portal. Using WebFOCUS, they created interactive dashboards and scorecards that incorporate metrics from across the business, all easily accessible via a secure portal environment that matches the organization’s brand standards. Now the organization’s executives, department administrators, and clinical managers can make strategic decisions based on current healthcare data, accessible via parameterized displays. A single report can serve myriad needs based on how each user wants to sort, filter, and drill into the data. WebFOCUS also plays a big role in helping ANTHC comply with state and federal healthcare regulations. During a hospital accreditation process, Joint Commission surveyors evaluate the organization’s quality assurance and performance improvement plan to assess progress with patient safety, clinical outcomes, meaningful use, inpatient measures, and various quality measures. WebFOCUS consolidates relevant information into a single PDF document that organizes pertinent data into methodologies, graphs, and data tables.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
