The Deutsche Blisterunion (DBU) faced significant challenges in managing the protocols for manufacturing patient-individual blister packs. The traditional paper-based system was time-consuming, prone to errors, and inefficient. The manual process of issuing medication in hospitals, old people’s homes, and other care facilities was not only labor-intensive but also increased the risk of medication and dosage errors. The need for a more streamlined, error-free, and efficient process was evident. Additionally, the DBU required a solution that could ensure the legal validity and security of the manufacturing protocols, which are critical in the pharmaceutical industry. The challenge was to find a system that could automate the document management and production processes while ensuring compliance with legal requirements for electronic signatures.

The Deutsche Blisterunion (DBU) is a Germany-wide merger of blister pharmacies, regional operating blister centers, and industrial companies. Located in the City of Schwerin, DBU aims to provide patients with individual medication in a sufficient and contemporary manner. The organization specializes in the mechanical blistering of drugs for individual patients, revolutionizing medical supply in hospitals, old people’s homes, and other care facilities. By automating the assembly and blister packaging of individual daily doses of medication, DBU significantly reduces the time and effort required for manual medication issuance, thereby minimizing medication and dosage errors. The DBU is committed to enhancing patient care through innovative solutions and efficient processes.

To address these challenges, the DBU implemented Aras Innovator, an enterprise open-source software suite, to manage the manufacturing protocols digitally. Aras Innovator automates the control and release procedures, making the use of paper documents obsolete. The DataSquare interface, Aras Innovator Signature Connector, enables the release process with a qualified electronic signature, ensuring that all protocols are digitally signed and archived in a legally secure manner. The workflow involves a signing request being posted to a group of Qualified Persons when a protocol needs signing. One of them accepts the request, checks the protocol using a voting dialogue, and signs the document with a smart card and PIN. Aras Innovator automatically registers the signed protocol, and the employee of the blister center receives a corresponding message to verify the signature. The digital distribution, review, and clearance of manufacturing protocols significantly simplify and speed up the entire process, allowing DBU to eliminate paper documents completely.

Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
