The Challenge
Park Road Post, a high-profile post-production facility in Wellington, New Zealand, faced the challenge of integrating the new Dolby Atmos technology into their existing workflows without causing any disruptions. The facility, known for its work on high-profile projects like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong, needed to keep up with the industry's demand for the immersive Dolby Atmos audio technology. However, they were hesitant to alter their current Pro Tools workflows or add any complexity that could potentially impact their production schedules. The challenge was to find a way to incorporate the new technology seamlessly into their existing workflow.
About The Customer
Park Road Post is a boutique post-production facility based in Wellington, New Zealand. It is one of the world's most advanced post-production facilities and a longtime customer of Avid. The facility has a notable portfolio that includes high-profile projects like The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Adventures of Tintin, and King Kong. Keeping up with the latest technology is crucial to its competitive success and the success of its selected client projects. The owner of Park Road Post, Peter Jackson, is always on the lookout for new technologies that can enhance their production capabilities without disrupting their existing workflows.
The Solution
To address the challenge, the Dolby Atmos development team collaborated with Avid to integrate the new technology into Park Road Post's existing workflow. The solution centered around Pro Tools | HDX, which was integrated with Dolby Atmos through a Dolby Atmos Panner AAX plugin and an outboard Rendering and Mastering Unit. This setup allowed the team to control up to 128 simultaneous audio objects inside Pro Tools without altering their workflow. To fully leverage the new technology for The Hobbit, the Park Road Post team upgraded two dubbing stages with new Pro Tools | HDX systems and Dolby Atmos, along with matching System 5 consoles. This setup enabled them to mix demanding sessions faster and easier.
Operational Impact
  • The integration of Dolby Atmos into Park Road Post's existing workflow was a huge success. The compatibility between Avid and Dolby technologies helped the team meet some incredibly steep production demands. The initial 7.1 mix played exactly the same in both rooms, acting as the starting point for the Dolby Atmos version. This allowed for easy verification of the automation against the stems sent. The new setup also expanded the team's creativity, allowing them to start with extremely high-quality 7.1 source elements and automation and move stuff around more boldly. The team gave Avid and Dolby high marks for expanding creativity without hindering the processes they were trying to improve.
