The Challenge
Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL), the world’s leading postal and logistics services group, faced a significant challenge in sharing security information in a timely manner across its vast network. The company's security network comprises 1,000 managers, 12,000 locations, and 485,000 employees in over 220 countries. The Corporate Security Department, which operates the Global Security Situation Center (GSSC), provides strategic direction and support, while security implementation and operations are managed at regional/country levels. The company faced risk events such as political instability, social unrest, and natural disasters that could threaten its operations, employees, and corporate assets. The efficiency of the GSSC was compromised due to the scale of the monitoring task and the proliferation of inputs from numerous databases, Excel files, email and telephone reports, and more. This high complexity made it possible for critical issues to be missed.
About The Customer
Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL) is the world’s leading postal and logistics services group. It has a massive security network of 1,000 managers, 12,000 locations, and 485,000 employees in more than 220 countries. The company's operations are essential to ensure the safety of the goods and the supply chain of DPDHL customers. The Corporate Security Department provides strategic direction and support, while security implementation and operations are managed at regional/country levels. DPDHL faces risk events such as political instability, social unrest, natural disasters, and others that can threaten its operations, its employees, and its corporate assets.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Corporate Security sought to bring multiple, disparate information sources together on a single, easily accessible platform. They collaborated closely with Everstream Analytics to develop a unique supply chain risk management solution. This platform allows a security manager to evaluate potentially disruptive events for the day, drawn from near real-time intelligence feeds, and advise operations counterparts on rerouting measures and where specific precautions are necessary. Security professionals can also assess locations and lanes based on objective datasets and make recommendations on the best available solutions. The platform is highly customizable, enabling each manager to see the precise security intelligence relevant to his or her role and geographic scope. Each user can also share on-the ground localized intelligence to alert the rest of the network of ripple effects from that incident. With this integrated platform solution, DPDHL now achieves a clear, instant situation overview in minutes instead of hours, facilitating rapid, effective decision making as well as preparation and roll-out of action plans.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Everstream Analytics platform has significantly improved DPDHL's security operations. The platform provides a clear, instant situation overview in minutes instead of hours, facilitating rapid, effective decision making as well as preparation and roll-out of action plans. For example, within moments of the devastating 2014 earthquake affecting northern Chile, Everstream provided geospatial intelligence on structural damage, road and airport closures, power outages and outbreaks of criminal activity and was able to create visibility of the event’s proximity to DPDHL locations and assets. The platform is highly customizable, enabling each manager to see the precise security intelligence relevant to his or her role and geographic scope. Each user can also share on-the ground localized intelligence to alert the rest of the network of ripple effects from that incident. This has led to efficiencies and commonality that together reduce network complexity and the overall cost of ensuring group-wide security.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Security managers across the group report that this solution provides access to at-a-glance security information five times faster than the previous solution.
  • The group also benefits from reducing the risk exposure of its corporate assets and of its own employees.
  • Using Everstream Analytics is far less resource-intensive and enables straightforward dissemination of security intelligence and knowledge sharing.
