The Challenge
DSV faced the challenge of integrating multiple business units and third-party systems to provide seamless end-to-end supply chain visibility and coordination for a large multinational client in the FMCG sector. The complexity was heightened by the need to manage regulated healthcare products alongside general goods, requiring precise coordination and compliance with service level agreements. The existing systems were fragmented, leading to inefficiencies and a lack of continuous visibility, planning, and execution.
About The Customer
DSV is a global leader in transport and logistics, operating in over 90 countries with a workforce of more than 75,000 employees. The company recently opened a new warehouse in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is the largest integrated logistics center on the continent. This facility is strategically positioned to enhance freight shipments and courier services via air, road, or sea. The Gauteng facility spans approximately 139,000 m2 and offers significant growth opportunities for businesses in the region by strengthening the supply chain network and enabling market expansion.
The Solution
DSV partnered with MPO to implement a supply chain control tower solution that would integrate their disparate systems and provide real-time visibility across their complex multi-party network. The MPO platform allowed DSV to automate highly complex workflows and processes, ensuring seamless coordination between internal and external service providers. The solution included advanced capacity planning, inventory management, and automated carrier selection, all integrated with existing WMS and legacy systems. This approach enabled DSV to retain the unique identities of their business units while meeting the specific needs of their FMCG client.
Operational Impact
  • End-to-end visibility at every transaction point, eliminating the need for separate carrier portals and streamlining communications.
  • Individual order tracking through EDI, API, and Web service technology, allowing for precise exception event management.
  • Real-time delivery notifications and shipment updates to all stakeholders in the supply chain.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 17% Increase in service provider productivity.
  • 22% Improvement in vehicle utilization for direct, retail for consumer, FTL, and LTL.
  • 14% Increase in order planning automation, including for warehouse and transit needs.
