The Challenge
Intercontainer Austria (ICA) is a leading transportation company in Austria, providing shipping and transportation services by rail and road, as well as via inland and coastal shipping. The company is headquartered in Vienna, managing other branches in Salzburg, Villach, Wels, and Germany. However, efficient control of these territories was only possible with transparent processes and comprehensive reporting for individual customers and branches. Previously, this requirement was addressed using Excel, with different PivotTables and cross-references. Given the increasing complexity, this was a very cumbersome and error-prone procedure. A new solution was needed that could produce more efficient, more detailed analyses and reports to optimize capacity management and contribute to improvements in business processes through faster, more flexible evaluations.
About The Customer
Intercontainer Austria (ICA) is one of the leading transportation companies in Austria. It is majority-owned by Rail Cargo Austria, the freight company of Österreichische Bundesbahnen, the Austrian state railway. The company performs shipping and transportation services by rail and road, as well as via inland and coastal shipping. Freight is kept in the same shipping unit or the same road vehicle and conveyed to and from all major European trading centers via different modes of transportation. The company is headquartered in Vienna, from where the other branches in Salzburg, Villach and Wels, as well as the German business, are managed.
The Solution
ICA deployed QlikView to 4 functional areas in just 5 days. With QlikView, ICA now analyzes capacity, load factors, customer quantities, and distribution performance metrics. With QlikView Server, ICA easily supports security and visibility while handling the large data volume pulled from multiple systems such as its ICA Neu in-house application as well as SAP, which is planned in the near future. The first step consisted of importing current quantity and volume data from the “ICA Neu” system into QlikView. This ensures that all employees work based on the same set of data and always have access to up-to-date information. The QlikView Server provides all applications to a broad group of users for individual analyses. This has made the daily work routine for ICA employees much simpler.
Operational Impact
  • Faster access to data for secure decision-making processes
  • Instant reaction to customer quantity shortfalls
  • Better advance estimates of capacity usage
Quantitative Benefit
  • With the introduction of QlikView, the time requirement for a monthly customer report was reduced from five days to a maximum of 3 hours
  • The implementation of QlikView took only five days, and the responsible employees were trained on the tasks in the new model within three days
