The Challenge
Mobile Knowledge was in search of a new security solution that could provide comprehensive protection without breaking the bank. They were dissatisfied with large security suites, such as those from McAfee and Symantec, as they found them to be more focused on profit than privacy. These suites often segmented different types of protection and sold them separately, forcing users to purchase multiple products to ensure complete protection. This was not only costly but also forced companies to prioritize their risks and protect against only the most immediate threats. The company was also looking for a solution that offered superior protection against zero-day attacks.
About The Customer
Mobile Knowledge is a company based in Ottawa, Canada that provides GPS, wireless, and mobile data communications technology for fleet management applications. These systems help dispatchers efficiently track and manage their fleets, including taxi fleets, heavy trucks and equipment, transit fleets, and emergency vehicles. The company serves over 150 customers worldwide and has an installed base of over 50,000 mobile data terminals. Their software helps companies comply with city government requirements and prepare logs for possible audits. For instance, with taxi fleets, dispatchers are able to cut wait times for customers by more efficiently managing which taxi responds to what fare.
The Solution
After extensive testing, Mobile Knowledge decided to implement BeyondTrust's PowerBroker Endpoint Protection Platform (PBEPP). The decision was influenced by the platform's impressive feature set, superior protection against zero-day attacks, and cost-effectiveness. PBEPP offered many more security features for the same price as the McAfee renewal. BeyondTrust also allowed Mobile Knowledge to structure the contract terms to their liking, enabling them to lock in longer-term licenses. The deployment process was fast and simple, and Mobile Knowledge was protected immediately. PBEPP was easy to manage and configure, and it was designed so that endpoint agents could be administered through an IT administrator’s management console, eliminating the need for a full-blown server environment.
Operational Impact
  • Zero-day protection: PBEPP provided superior protection against zero-day attacks, protecting systems when patches were out of date and removing the need for signatures.
  • Centralized security management: PBEPP offered centralized policy enforcement, providing a single point of visibility into and control over the network.
  • Policy creation and enforcement: PBEPP allowed for the creation and enforcement of security policies, enhancing the overall security posture of the company.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Superior protection and numerous security features at a low cost: Mobile Knowledge was able to get many more security features from BeyondTrust for the same price as the McAfee renewal.
  • Automated notification when problems occur: PBEPP provided automated notifications when problems occurred, enabling quick response and resolution.
