The primary challenge was to successfully plan routes and ensure timely delivery of these critical healthcare products. The company needed a solution that would not only streamline their delivery routes but also provide real-time updates to their customers about the delivery status.

Homecare Medical is a family-owned healthcare business based in Ireland. The company employs 100 staff and is dedicated to supplying quality products and services to the healthcare market. As part of their service, they deliver critical healthcare products directly to people's homes across the country. They have years of experience in the distribution of products on a wholesale basis and home-delivery services. Despite their expertise, they continually strive for further efficiencies and cost savings in their operations.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Homecare Medical collaborated with SmartRoutes to optimize their delivery services. The logistics and admin staff were trained on SmartRoutes' Desktop Route Planner, and all drivers were onboarded with the Mobile Driver apps. This allowed for the setting of separate start and end locations for routes on a driver-by-driver basis, enabling drivers to know in advance their expected end of the workday. SmartRoutes' in-built GPS live vehicle tracking was also utilized, providing real-time vehicle locations and ETA updates to the Customer Support staff. This feature enabled the team to provide timely updates to customers, ensuring their peace of mind. In the initial weeks and months of the project, SmartRoutes worked closely with Homecare Medical to tailor certain solutions to their needs, streamlining processes and maximizing the use of all features.

However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Consequently, the lack of accurate and real-time visibility into inventory levels across multiple supply rooms in multiple hospital facilities creates additional inefficiency in the system causing over-ordering, hoarding, and wasted supplies. Other sources of waste and cost were also identified as candidates for improvement. Existing systems and processes did not provide adequate security for high-cost inventory within the hospital, which was another driver of cost. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
