The Challenge
Pelephone Communications, a leading 3G mobile service provider in Israel, was facing challenges in improving network resilience and analyzing data services delivery. The company was operating in a highly competitive and unregulated market, where customers had high expectations of network speed and reliability. To meet these expectations and ensure high-quality user experience, Pelephone decided to enhance its network speed and reliability. However, the company's existing business intelligence software, SAP BusinessObjects, was no longer suitable as it was IT-centric and had performance issues. It could take up to 30 minutes for a single query, which was unacceptable for the network operations center. Therefore, the team of 75 engineers started looking for alternatives.
About The Customer
Pelephone Communications is Israel’s leading 3G mobile service provider. Since its establishment in 1986, the company has been a pioneer in the mobile communications sector in Israel. It was the first provider to offer mobile phone services in the country. Currently, Pelephone has 2.9 million subscribers and employs 3800 people. The company is a leader in mobile content in terms of subscriber numbers and use. It serves all government ministries, prominent defense systems manufacturer Rafael, Dan Hotels, IBM, and major organizations in healthcare and financial services. Pelephone provides customers with advanced mobile internet services, enabling them to surf hundreds of leading content sites suitable for mobile phones. Independent research has found that surfing on iPhones that run on the Pelephone network is the fastest in the world.
The Solution
After evaluating the market, Pelephone decided to deploy the QlikView Business Discovery platform. This platform was chosen to provide 150 users in the engineering division with a more centralized business model to improve operational agility. The main application in QlikView, RBS, integrates with Google Maps to monitor radio frequency network performance geographically. This is used for monitoring the signal from the antennae that carry all call and data traffic. The QlikView dashboard in the engineering division monitors 50 key performance indicators (KPIs). Additionally, faulty antennae can now be identified by location because of the GIS integration. A performance issue, for example, caused by component capacity being reached, is visible through decreasing performance on the dashboard.

Vodafone Hosted On AWS
Vodafone found that traffic for the applications peak during the four-month period when the international cricket season is at its height in Australia. During the 2011/2012 cricket season, 700,000 consumers downloaded the Cricket Live Australia application. Vodafone needed to be able to meet customer demand, but didn’t want to invest in additional resources that would be underutilized during cricket’s off-season.
