The Challenge

The key for the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority train system is flexibility and modularity based on passenger volume and changing car configurations.

The Customer
The Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority
About The Customer
The Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority that is responsible for transporting much of Silicon Valley's residents.
The Solution

The use of a set of LonWorks® communications chips from Echelon was crucial in monitoring and keeping the whole system together.

Data Collected
Maintenance Requirements, Vehicle Location Tracking, Vehicle Status, Visitor Volume
Operational Impact
  • [Process Optimization - Real Time Asset Tracking]
Echelon's chips allow for the numerous components of the elaborate train system from the train doors and windows all the way to the braking and propulsion systems to be carefully tracked for functionality and maintenance reasons.
  • [Cost Reduction - IT]
In the past, wires were used to run the monitoring systems. However, with this kind of set-up there is no need for large amounts of bandwidth. With interconnection kept to a minimum, the system is independent of an external wireless network or on power lines.
  • [Data Management - Data Collection]
This kind of data gathering and monitoring is important to the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority's mission of preserving these older, classic trains.
