The Challenge
So-net Entertainment Taiwan, a subsidiary of Sony Network Communications Inc., faced a significant challenge in protecting its gaming hosting platforms from frequent, massive DDoS threats. As the host of a collection of popular mobile games, the company needed to ensure seamless protection against these threats to maintain the quality of service for its customers, many of whom are famous game developers. Prior to partnering with Nexusguard, So-net had been using a hardware-based DDoS mitigation vendor. However, the company was frustrated with the lack of timely response and technical support from the vendor. Despite being introduced to a system integrator for technical support, So-net was still unable to access the expertise required to handle DDoS attacks on its own, prompting the need for a change.
About The Customer
So-net Entertainment Taiwan is a subsidiary of Sony Network Communications Inc. The company hosts a collection of popular mobile games and is responsible for ensuring seamless, uninterrupted access to these games for its customers. Many of So-net's customers are renowned game developers who rely on the company's hosting platforms for their multiplayer games. These games have evolved into e-sports, proving to be a significant source of revenue for game developers and hosting platforms. As such, So-net's role is crucial in maintaining the quality of service and protecting the commercial interests of these game developers.
The Solution
So-net began reviewing offers from a range of security vendors as the contract with the previous vendor neared its end. Nexusguard emerged as a frontrunner due to its responsive SOC and technical support. During the trial period, Nexusguard successfully mitigated an 80 Gbps attack. Nexusguard's solution included a private and public cloud scrubbing with the deployment of MX7000, enabling in-cloud scrubbing and offloading traffic spikes to Nexusguard's global cloud. This 'cloud-in-a-box' solution provided better granularity, visibility, and control over DDoS traffic. So-net also chose Nexusguard's Origin Protection (OP) to protect its network infrastructure on an on-demand basis. Nexusguard's provisioning team analyzed popular mobile games' traffic patterns and vulnerabilities, developing 'site profiles' for customized security policies. As a partner of Nexusguard under the Transformational Partner Program (TAP), So-net could also market and resell the full suite of DDoS protection products to its customers.
Operational Impact
  • The partnership with Nexusguard has provided So-net with access to people, processes, and technology that they could not have obtained otherwise, enabling them to offer DDoS mitigation-as-a-service. The company now has exclusive access to the Provider Portal, which allows them to gain a granular view of network traffic, configure security policies on different network levels, and manage individual customer accounts. The So-net network and sales teams also receive regular comprehensive training to enable them to launch new products and provide post-sales services. Overall, So-net is pleased with the substantially improved visibility and control, as well as the more timely, responsive, and resourceful SOC and technical support provided by the Nexusguard team.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Nexusguard successfully mitigated an 80 Gbps attack during the trial period.
  • So-net now has exclusive access to the Provider Portal customized to their branding design and network environment.
  • So-net's network and sales teams receive regular comprehensive selection of online and workshop-based sales, technical and operation training classes.
