In the mature Nordic and Baltic markets, TeliaSonera services 23 million out of a total population of 31 million customers. The company's growth strategy in these regions involves offering managed services for voice and data that business customers can tailor to their needs. In the European and Asian markets, TeliaSonera only offers mobile services but is continually exploring new opportunities and expanding as appropriate. The company's managed service solutions include monitoring, support, maintenance, and security from the network level to the server level to the desktop. For the security component, TeliaSonera needed a flexible solution that could cater to a wide range of customers from small businesses to large enterprises and provide easy, cost-effective management of hundreds of firewall gateways.

Through network affiliates, TeliaSonera also holds strong and rapidly expanding positions in mobile communications throughout Europe and Asia, including Russia and Turkey. The company operates in two distinct markets, offering managed services for voice and data in the mature Nordic and Baltic markets, and mobile services in the European and Asian markets.
The Solution
TeliaSonera chose Check Point's security solution for its managed services, the same solution it uses to protect its own networks. The company secures the perimeter of its internal office network with VPN-1 Power VSX. To prevent security breaches that could damage the credibility of its wireless subscriber network, TeliaSonera uses FireWall-1 GX, which offers comprehensive network- and application-level security for mobile services. TeliaSonera also replaced a third-party clustering solution with ClusterXL to ensure the availability of its security gateways and its subscriber network and managed service solutions for business customers. To manage hundreds of security gateways and many different policy environments for itself and its customers, TeliaSonera uses Provider-1, which consolidates and centralizes policy management for thousands of customers with different needs.
