The Challenge
Physicians Mutual, an insurance company, was struggling with the management of millions of lines of complex mainframe code. The lack of documentation and tools to manage this code led to long development cycles, preventing the company from capitalizing on critical business opportunities. The complexity of the mainframe code and the absence of tools to manage it resulted in missed opportunities to capitalize on immediate business interests. The company needed a solution that would help them understand and manage their complex applications, speed up maintenance and development cycles, and attract and retain top developer talent.
About The Customer
Physicians Mutual Insurance Company and Physicians Life Insurance Company are members of the Physicians Mutual family. Physicians Mutual Insurance Company offers reliable Medicare Supplement, dental and supplemental health insurance. Physicians Life Insurance Company provides important life insurance coverage and annuities. The company has a significant investment in mainframe systems that support the business. The application code comprises millions of lines of code that must be maintained, modified and flexible enough to support the changing needs of the business.
The Solution
Physicians Mutual turned to Compuware's Topaz, a modern code editing IDE that provides feedback and guidance to shorten cycles. Topaz Workbench with Program Analysis and Enterprise Data was deployed to provide a GUI integrated development environment with program structure charts. Topaz Runtime Visualizer was also deployed to provide understanding and documentation of program execution, identification of dead code, and cross-platform data visualization and data management capability. Topaz Workbench provides a host-to-host data movement capability that empowers the Physicians Mutual developers to quickly handle data management tasks that used to take much longer. The solution also included Topaz for Program Analysis and Topaz for Enterprise Data, which allowed developers and other IT personnel to work with data on both mainframe and distributed systems in a unified editor.

Predictive Maintenance for Industrial Chillers
For global leaders in the industrial chiller manufacturing, reliability of the entire production process is of the utmost importance. Chillers are refrigeration systems that produce ice water to provide cooling for a process or industrial application. One of those leaders sought a way to respond to asset performance issues, even before they occur. The intelligence to guarantee maximum reliability of cooling devices is embedded (pre-alarming). A pre-alarming phase means that the cooling device still works, but symptoms may appear, telling manufacturers that a failure is likely to occur in the near future. Chillers who are not internet connected at that moment, provide little insight in this pre-alarming phase.

Integral Plant Maintenance
Mercedes-Benz and his partner GAZ chose Siemens to be its maintenance partner at a new engine plant in Yaroslavl, Russia. The new plant offers a capacity to manufacture diesel engines for the Russian market, for locally produced Sprinter Classic. In addition to engines for the local market, the Yaroslavl plant will also produce spare parts. Mercedes-Benz Russia and his partner needed a service partner in order to ensure the operation of these lines in a maintenance partnership arrangement. The challenges included coordinating the entire maintenance management operation, in particular inspections, corrective and predictive maintenance activities, and the optimizing spare parts management. Siemens developed a customized maintenance solution that includes all electronic and mechanical maintenance activities (Integral Plant Maintenance).
