The Challenge
In 2010, with the opening of a new terminal, Vnukovo International Airport needed to equip over one hundred check-in counters with reliable, fast, and easy-to-operate printers for producing boarding passes and bag tags. The printers also needed to be certified to work under a SITA CUTE multiuser access environment. The airport's IT team faced the challenge of finding a solution that could handle the high demands of a busy airport environment, ensuring high levels of uptime and ease of use by different airlines.
About The Customer
Vnukovo International Airport is one of Russia’s largest and busiest airports, located 27km from the center of Moscow. It serves over 200 domestic and international carriers, including Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and Germanwings, with more than 120,000 flights per year. The airport has a capacity of over 6,800 passengers per hour through its two terminals and is Europe’s busiest airport for international flights by larger private planes. The airport has undergone extensive expansion and infrastructure improvements over the last decade, including new terminals and a direct rail service linking it to the center of Moscow.
The Solution
After extensive market analysis and testing of multiple printers, Vnukovo turned to Intermec by Honeywell to provide over 100 printer sets for the check-in counters. Each set consists of an Intermec by Honeywell PF4i for boarding passes and a PF2i for bag tags. The strong, all-metal construction and superior throughput for mission-critical environments made the PF4i and PF2i the ideal choice. The compact size ensured they fit the space-constrained area available on the check-in desks. The PF series is characterized by outstanding reliability and high-quality printing. The printers could easily cope with different media formats provided by various airlines, ensuring high-quality, reliable results. Airline staff could easily change the settings on the printers for quick operation with various paper formats. The ability to update software versions on the PF printers was also important, allowing the IT team to update software easily and conveniently.
Operational Impact
  • The PF4i and PF2i printers' strong, all-metal construction and superior throughput made them ideal for Vnukovo's mission-critical environment.
  • The compact size of the printers ensured they fit the space-constrained area available on the check-in desks.
  • The printers' outstanding reliability and high-quality printing capabilities ensured smooth operations at the check-in counters.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Vnukovo experienced a 30% reduction in maintenance costs due to the reliability and ease of maintenance of the Intermec by Honeywell printers.
