BNP Paribas, a leading bank, recognized the urgent need to address the environmental impact of human activities, particularly the carbon footprint of individuals. The bank understood that without a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the global surface temperature could rise by 2°C to 3.5°C by 2100, leading to an increase in extreme weather events and negative consequences for human health and development. The bank also acknowledged the Paris Agreement's commitment to limit CO2 emissions to keep global warming below 2°C. However, the average carbon footprint of a French person in 2018 was 11.2 t CO2eq per year, significantly higher than the target of about 2 tonnes of CO2 per year per capita. BNP Paribas realized that in addition to structural changes in production patterns, individual commitment to decarbonizing consumption and lifestyle was crucial to achieving these reduction targets.
The customers of BNP Paribas and Hello bank! are the primary beneficiaries of this solution. These individuals, who are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, now have a tool that not only helps them manage their budget but also track and reduce their carbon footprint. The tool is particularly beneficial for those committed to decarbonizing their consumption and lifestyle, as it provides them with a simple, concrete, and engaging way to understand their environmental impact. By using the tool, these customers can make more informed decisions about their spending habits and contribute to the global effort to reduce GHG emissions.
BNP Paribas partnered with Greenly to develop a CO2 impact estimator for their customers. This tool, integrated into the BNP Paribas and Hello bank! apps, allows customers to track the carbon impact of their spending and find ways to reduce it. The 'My Carbon Footprint' feature is accessible from the 'My Accounts' application. The tool estimates the carbon footprint by calculating the associated GHG emissions for each expense, using the transaction name to categorize the expense and determine the type of product or service associated with it. A coefficient, specific to each purchase category or supplier, is applied to the expenditure amount to convert euros into kg of CO2. The tool also allows users to refine their carbon footprint estimate for certain expenditure categories, such as food and transport, by analyzing the nature of their expenditure in more detail.
