The Challenge
The city of Medellín wanted to serve a broader demographic by applying new technologies to connect city departments and agencies like transportation, administration, healthcare, education, utilities, and construction. To accomplish Medellín’s objectives, priority was given to the areas of the city where bigger social and economic issues were found. Emphasis was placed on the planning and development of urban projects to transform the physical environment in order to implement profound social and cultural shifts in the targeted communities.
About The Customer
Medellín is quickly becoming a leader in future cities. The city has included its citizens in the planning and execution of public works including: spaces for art, the construction of public libraries, the founding of new ecological parks, a public transportation and bike share system, and new facilities. Their smart city model encourages cross- agency collaboration and is challenging historical obstacles to information sharing and innovation. City dwellers young and old have come to expect more transparency and opportunities for participation.
The Solution
Using CARTO, Servinformación created Mapas Medellín for the Sigamos Medellín website. The data portal is aimed at opening communication channels between government and citizens. An application is available for tracking public transport, real time social media updates, and information about traffic routes. CARTO’s APIs allowed for the integration of large data to work without compromising scale or the interpretation of millions of data points. CARTO’s accessible visualizations gave Sigamos Medellín the transparency necessary for citizens and government officials.
Operational Impact
  • The Sigamos Medellín portal lets citizens find detailed information on infrastructure and construction including budgets, projected completion dates, and stages of development.
  • The interactive Sigamos Medellín portal uses the CARTO platform for data visualization and seamless integration with Google Maps as well as hosting data layers including traffic, weather, and satellite, addressing the varying needs of citizens with simple interactivity.
  • City government projects like the portal in Medellín are providing a framework for transparency and accountability with open data, geolocation, and visualizations.
