The Challenge
Dutch Railways (NS) faced the challenge of proving their capability to deliver reliable and better services to secure the next railway concession from the Dutch government. The company had to integrate various IT systems across nine different types of trains, each with its own IT environment, making maintenance expensive and complex. They needed a unified, scalable, and reliable platform to handle the onboard and onshore systems, ensuring synchronization and no message loss. The goal was to leverage real-time data from over 800 trains to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.
About The Customer
Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen [NS]) is the principal passenger railway operator in the Netherlands. A private company solely owned by the Dutch government, it provides rail services on the Dutch main-rail network and international rail services to other European destinations. NS is responsible for the majority of passenger rail transport in the Netherlands, operating a vast network of trains that serve millions of passengers annually. The company aims to deliver high-quality, reliable, and efficient rail services, continuously improving its operations and customer satisfaction.
The Solution
To address the challenges, Dutch Railways selected TIBCO as their technology partner. They implemented TIBCO BusinessEvents® for streaming analytics, TIBCO ActiveSpaces® for in-memory computing, TIBCO BusinessWorks™ for integration, and TIBCO Enterprise Message Service™ for reliable messaging. This comprehensive solution provided a scalable and reliable platform to handle the vast amount of data generated by the trains. The integration ensured guaranteed synchronization between onboard and onshore systems, enabling real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance. The solution also facilitated the development of a mobile app for passengers to view train locations and available seats, enhancing customer experience.

The company has a long track record of innovative technology solutions. For example, 3M helps its customers optimize parking operations by automating fee collection and other processes. To improve support for this rapidly expanding segment, 3M needed to automate its own data collection and reporting. Jason Fox, Mobile Application Architect at 3M, upped the ante by volunteering to deliver the new app in one weekend. For Fox and his team, these requirements meant turning to the cloud instead of an on-premises datacenter. “My first thought was to go directly to the cloud because we needed to provide access not only to our salespeople, but to resellers who didn’t have access to our internal network,” says Fox. “The cloud just seemed like a logical choice.”
