The Challenge
San Bernardino County School System, which services 40 school districts and supports K-12 schools, community colleges, and occupational programs, was struggling with efficiently integrating data and providing reporting to comply with the Affordable Care Act and other new regulations. The school system was also required to continuously respond to ad hoc information requests. The new payroll reporting requirements further complicated the situation, as the system struggled to integrate the necessary data. Costly payroll system upgrades and time-consuming, manual efforts were not in the budget. The technology department needed to continuously respond to ad hoc requests for information quickly, such as budget impacts of increasing a health benefit, or the number of substitute teachers employed in a given month.
About The Customer
The customer in this case study is the San Bernardino County School System. The Superintendent’s office services 40 school districts throughout San Bernardino County, east of the greater Los Angeles area. They support K-12 schools, community colleges, and occupational programs serving more than 400,000 students. The Superintendent’s office also services five other counties: Del Norte, Inyo, Mono, Humboldt, and San Mateo. The school system was struggling with efficiently integrating data and providing reporting to comply with new regulations, as well as continuously responding to ad hoc information requests.
The Solution
San Bernardino County partnered with Altair to find an efficient, effective way to comply with the new laws without placing too great a burden on their limited resources. Altair provided self-service data preparation capabilities to more than 300 users throughout the county. Payroll clerks at each of the 40 K-14 school districts within San Bernardino County can now quickly access and compile substitute teacher data to ensure compliance with the Healthy Workplace Healthy Family Act. The system also allows them to review healthcare coverage data for employees in order to comply with the Affordable Care Act. Ad hoc requests can also be run without the involvement of the technology team. Altair pulls in and validates raw data automatically, ensuring the accuracy of the information provided.
