GM Global Battery Systems Lab - IoT ONE Case Study
Applicable Industries
  • Battery
The Challenge

Testing expensive battery prototypes is an around-the-clock job for the engineers at GM’s Global Battery Systems Lab. Excessive heat or high voltage can make batteries unstable or vulnerable to damage. Confirming the reason for the alarm and eliminating fault alerts sometimes requires onsite investigation, often at non-business hours.

The Customer

The General Motor (GM) Global Battery Systems Lab

About The Customer

The General Motor (GM) Global Battery Systems Lab is responsible for testing all lithium-ion batteries for GM vehicles. The 38-employee lab tests prototypes and production batteries as part of a plan to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

The Solution

The team uses Java, with guidance from the BlackBerry Corporate Developer Program, to develop the General Motors LABerry application. The custom application links to the lab’s monitoring and alert software so that engineers receive detailed test information on their BlackBerry smartphones. Operational Impact
  • [Efficiency Improvement - Maintenance]

Real-time status reports enable engineers to remotely diagnose the status of a device.

  • [Data Management - Data Analysis]

BlackBerry Enterprise server solutions enable aggregation of 'big data' to enable more robust analysis of testing results.

  • [Efficiency Improvement - Labor]

Engineers are able to focus their time on analyzing results and solving problems, as opposed to taking measurements and responding to crises.
