The Challenge
The National Portrait Gallery, in collaboration with historian Simon Schama, was tasked with creating an immersive and seamless audio guide experience for their exhibition. The exhibition was divided into five themes: Power, Love, Fame, People, and Self. The challenge was to provide an automatic audio guide that would allow guests to explore the exhibit in their own language without having to manually control the audio. The goal was to enhance the visitor's experience by allowing them to focus solely on the exhibits, without the distraction of operating an audio guide.
About The Customer
The customer in this case study is the National Portrait Gallery, a renowned art gallery in London, England. The gallery collaborated with historian Simon Schama to create five new displays exploring the development, character, and meanings of British portraiture. The exhibits were split into five themes: Power, Love, Fame, People, and Self. The gallery aimed to provide an immersive and seamless experience for their visitors, allowing them to explore the exhibit in their own language without the distraction of manually controlling an audio guide.
The Solution
The solution involved the use of BLE Beacons, which were strategically positioned around the exhibit. These beacons were designed to trigger the audio guide when guests were within a certain proximity of an exhibit. The audio guide would then play the corresponding audio for that theme. The exhibit was also made available on both Android and iOS app stores while it was live. The app used the Automatic Museum Guide template, designed to immerse the visitor in the experience, with audio commentary automatically playing at the right time and location. The app also featured an indoor project with a floor map and BLE Beacon enabled proximity detection to trigger audio content when the visitor approached set locations.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Automatic Museum Guide significantly enhanced the visitor's experience at the exhibition. The seamless transition of audio guides based on the visitor's location allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the exhibits without the distraction of operating an audio guide. The app's availability on both Android and iOS platforms ensured a wider reach, allowing more visitors to benefit from the automatic audio guide. The use of BLE Beacons for proximity detection and triggering of audio content was a key factor in the success of this solution, providing a truly immersive and seamless experience for visitors.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The app was made available on both Android and iOS platforms, expanding its reach to a wide range of smartphone users.
  • The use of BLE Beacons ensured automatic triggering of audio guides, eliminating the need for manual control.
  • The app featured an indoor project with a floor map, enhancing the visitor's navigation through the exhibit.
