The Challenge

Les Grappes, a platform for short food supply chain (SFSC) of wines, was seeking an easy and effective way to assess their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their commitment to climate change. The company, which connects over 1,200 winegrowers directly to customers, wanted to measure their carbon footprint to better structure their environmental policy and devise a long-term action plan to reduce emissions. The challenge was to find a solution that was not only accurate and comprehensive, but also user-friendly and intuitive. The company also wanted a solution that could account for both direct and energy-related emissions (Scope 1 & 2), as well as indirect emissions caused by service providers and services used by the company (Scope 3).

About The Customer

Les Grappes is a platform for short food supply chain (SFSC) of wines, connecting buyers directly to winegrowers with fewer intermediaries. On lesgrappes.com, more than 1,200 winegrowers sell their product online, direct to the customer. The suppliers of Les Grappes cultivate their product with passion and dedication. As the product is delivered without intermediaries, the producers are paid fairly, and the purchaser pays the right price. Founded in 2014, Les Grappes is now the first platform for direct purchases from winegrowers for individuals and professionals in France and Europe.

The Solution

Les Grappes chose to work with Greenly, a provider of carbon footprint solutions, due to their responsiveness, dynamism, and the simplicity and intuitiveness of their measurement solution. Greenly's solution, which has been awarded the French Tech Green 2020 label, allowed Les Grappes to calculate their carbon footprint, which amounted to 1201t CO2e in 2020. The solution took into account not only direct and energy-related emissions, but also indirect emissions caused by service providers and services used by the company. With the data provided by Greenly, Les Grappes is now in the process of defining an action plan to reduce emissions. The company plans to involve managers for each major emission item and work with the relevant departments to identify possible and impactful reduction actions, while respecting the 2022 development and growth objectives that have been defined.

Operational Impact
  • The collaboration with Greenly has allowed Les Grappes to better understand their carbon footprint and structure their environmental policy more effectively. The data provided by Greenly has been instrumental in helping the company to identify the major sources of their emissions and to start devising an action plan to reduce them. The company is now in the process of involving managers for each major emission item and working with the relevant departments to identify possible and impactful reduction actions. This process is being carried out while respecting the 2022 development and growth objectives that have been defined, ensuring that the company's commitment to the climate does not compromise its business objectives.

Quantitative Benefit
  • Calculated carbon footprint of 1201t CO2e in 2020

  • Identified major emission sources: Freight (49.5%), Food and drink (45.4%), Digital (1.5%)

  • Calculated per employee emission: 34 tCO2 / employee
