The Challenge
The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) was facing a significant challenge in managing and understanding their energy utilization, particularly in remote indigenous islands off the coast of New Guinea. The team had no clear understanding of their asset management or energy utilization for this area. They were using manual processes in Excel, Java, and MySQL for anomaly detection, which was time-consuming and inefficient. The team of four was doing the work of what twenty analysts should be doing, and they needed to increase their productivity drastically. The lack of a proper blueprint for energy saving and the use of multiple disparate points of data ingestion further complicated the situation.
About The Customer
The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) has been representing local councils since 1896, supporting their operations and strengthening relationships with their communities. The association connects people and places across all councils, supporting their drive to innovate and improve through smart services and sustainable solutions. LGAQ’s data and analytics team, led by Brodie Ruttan, principal of data analytics, is accompanied by data architect and governance officer Sunny Hussey-Smith, and business intelligence specialist Shane Dolley. The team provides solutions to all of their councils through data and analytics, assisting councils in energy, waste management, fleet, mobile, solar, and more.
The Solution
The LGAQ's data and analytics team, led by Brodie Ruttan, decided to leverage the Alteryx Analytic Process Automation Platform to automate their processes. They created macros around a single ingestion point to streamline the energy data input, replacing the multiple disparate points of entry. The team combined three technologies for an end-to-end process: Snowflake as the data warehouse to keep everything organized, Alteryx for data extraction, preparation, and blending, and Tableau for visualizing energy consumption and utilization. This solution not only automated their processes but also provided a clear and transparent analysis of energy consumption, leading to the discovery of major cost savings for the council.

Turning A Stadium Into A Smart Building
Honeywell created what it called the “intelligent system” for the National Stadium in Beijing, China, turning the venue for the opening and closing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics into a “smart building.” Designed by highly controversial artist Ai Weiwei, the “Bird’s Nest” remains one of the most impressive feats of stadium architecture in the world. Buoy Status Monitoring with LoRa
The Netherlands are well-known for their inland waterways, canals, sluices and of course port activities. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure indicates that there are thousands of buoys and fixed items in and near water environments that would profit from IoT monitoring. One of the problems with buoys for example, is that they get hit by ships and the anchor cable breaks. Without connectivity, it takes quite some time to find out that something has happened with that buoy. Not to mention the costs of renting a boat to go to the buoy to fix it. Another important issue, is that there is no real-time monitoring of the buoys at this moment. Only by physically visiting the object on the water, one gains insight in its status.
