Magna Mysteria is a Bristol-based theatre production company founded in 2013. The company is known for its innovative approach to theatre, combining themes of magic, illusion, and technology. The company's productions are interactive and contemporary, inviting the audience to become participants in the show through augmented reality and other pervasive technologies. The company's flagship production, Magna Mysteria, has toured venues and cities across the UK, and plans to tour a new set of locations across the country and beyond. The company is led by performer/director/producer duo Becca Gill and Jay Kerry.
The Solution
Magna Mysteria turned to Twilio, a cloud communications platform, to fulfill the mobile-centric elements of the show. Each audience member was issued an RFID enabled tarot card at the beginning of the show, pre-programmed with user-submitted personal details. Performers across the numerous sites where the show's acts took place were issued with card readers, adding a personal touch and an added layer of immersion for patrons. Upon arrival, everyone in the audience presented their cards and was shortly thereafter called on their mobile phones with dialogue and clues from the character on where to go for the next segment of the story. Twilio's SMS and voice call capabilities were used to direct the audience around venues. The Magna Mysteria experience even extended mobile tech into the performance itself, with some acts featuring a mystical mute character, only able to communicate through recorded messages distributed via Twilio.
