The Challenge
The European-based company, one of the largest prepared-food delivery chains on the continent, was facing a significant challenge in 2014. Cyberattacks on the company’s website were increasing in frequency and severity, leading to customer complaints and potentially damaging the company's reputation and market position. The company needed a solution to block the harmful traffic that was negatively impacting the customer ordering experience, while ensuring that legitimate eCommerce traffic continued to reach the website. The challenge was not only to protect the company's digital assets but also to maintain a seamless and efficient customer experience. The situation was further exacerbated during the pandemic, with an increase in food delivery orders and a simultaneous surge in cyberattacks.
About The Customer
The customer is a European-based company, founded in the mid-1980s, and is now one of the largest prepared-food delivery chains on the continent. The company encompasses several well-known brands and employs tens of thousands of people in dozens of countries. It is widely considered an expert brand in prepared food delivery, having started with a pure-play delivery model based on the digital medium without any “walk-in” or “dine-in” options. The company's business model heavily relies on its website and mobile applications for customer orders, making it crucial to maintain a seamless and safe customer experience.
The Solution
To mitigate the cyberattacks and drive its digital transformation, the company chose the Imperva Web Application Firewall (WAF) as a cornerstone technology. The Imperva Cloud WAF enabled the company to block harmful traffic and create a seamless ordering experience for its customers. The company also partnered with Evolutio, an Imperva Gold Partner solutions provider based in Spain, to manage their WAF and ensure the continuing optimal performance of their eCommerce platform. As the company’s business and technology evolved, Evolutio worked directly with Imperva to meet unexpected challenges. The solution was designed to scale up with the business, using every module that comes with the Cloud WAF at the enterprise level, including Advanced Bot Protection and Advanced Analytics. The company also emphasized the importance of the Advanced Bot Protection module to protect mobile applications, as attacks on mobile platforms were becoming more frequent and sophisticated.
Operational Impact
  • Since deploying the Imperva WAF in 2014, the company has successfully managed to thwart larger, more frequent, and more intense cyberattacks. The solution has not only provided security for their eCommerce platforms but also contributed significantly to the overall success and growth of the business. The company has been able to maintain optimal eCommerce performance and a seamless and safe customer experience, even as it continues to grow. The company's CISO concluded that they are a textbook example of how a company that depends heavily on its website and mobile applications can use Web Application Firewall technology effectively.
