The Challenge
The 1. Obermurtaler Brauereigenossenschaft, a leading brewery in Austria, was facing several challenges. The company had no accompanying cost accounting, no mobile access to current data for staff working offsite, and no ad-hoc analyses were possible. The company was keen to have a simultaneous costings program designed as well. This was to provide the executive management team more quickly with the information it needed for decision making on, for instance, compiling the product range, manufacturing, sales or marketing. The new solution needed to answer queries on sales, such as, for example, sales of total and individual products as well as by region. Another requirement concerned the mobility of the business intelligence (BI) application to give off-site staff the opportunity of working with daily data updates.
About The Customer
The 1. Obermurtaler Brauereigenossenschaft, registered in Murau as a limited co-operative, is one of Austria’s leading breweries. The company supplies customers in the general retail trade sector, specialist outlets, and the catering business, with various sorts of beer as well as soft drinks and juices. In 2009, its 180 employees generated a turnover of €34.3 million. The brewery fills 30,000 bottles and up to 180 barrels an hour in its ultra-modern bottling plant. One central logistics unit supplies customers in the general retail trade sector and specialist outlets (70 per cent) as well as the catering business (30 per cent). The Styria-based company produces a range of beverages including traditionally brewed pale Märzen lagers, pils, bock, and other sorts of beer as well as beer schnapps, soft drinks, and juices. Currently the co-operative employs 180 people and in 2009 had a turnover of €34.3 million.
The Solution
The company decided to replace the L5000 with the Java-supported ERP M3 solution from Lawson. At the same time, the brewery wanted to introduce an analysis and reporting tool, to obtain fast, accurate access to all data relevant to its operations. The company was also particularly keen to have a simultaneous costings program designed as well. This was to provide the executive management team more quickly with the information it needed for decision making on, for instance, compiling the product range, manufacturing, sales or marketing. The full-service provider finally recommended the QlikView analysis and reporting solution from QlikTech, a recommendation the brewery was happy to adopt. Terna handled the overall deployment much to the satisfaction of the Murau brewery. The simple and fast implementation of QlikView and the knowledge displayed by Terna meant the deployment and first applications took just seven weeks. During this time the team also set up the accompanying cost accounting program.
Operational Impact
  • Daily updated assessments
  • Comparisons over different periods of time
  • Mobile access
Quantitative Benefit
  • The brewery can analyse around 7.2 million sets of data to respond to user-defined questions in seconds due to QlikView’s memory-based architecture.
  • The sales division can find out, for example, simply by touching a button, how well sales are going.
