The Challenge
Design Within Reach (DWR), a multichannel modern furnishings retailer, was struggling with its data management. The company’s sales and inventory data was often analyzed using Excel, and occasionally with custom built reports using SAP’s Crystal Reports. This led to inconsistencies in data analysis as different people used different processes to create reports. The IT team was also burdened with doing one-off pulls from the company’s databases. DWR needed a solution that was flexible enough to be used by all Area Managers, regardless of location, and easy enough that they could find answers on their own, despite their levels of technical ability.
About The Customer
Design Within Reach (DWR) is a multichannel modern furnishings retailer with 45 locations across the U.S. The company was founded in 1999 by Rob Forbes with a mission to make modern design accessible to anyone – anywhere at anytime. Headquartered in Stamford, Conn., DWR was launched due to Forbes' frustration with the difficulty of finding designs he loved and those produced by some of the most well-known designers. The company’s area managers work with studio managers and sales representatives to monitor item sales, demand and trends. Accessibility is at the heart of DWR's business, making it imperative for the company to be in sync with its studio sales team to know what is on the floor in all 45 of its studios in order to most effectively control inventory.
The Solution
DWR implemented QlikView, a Business Discovery platform that delivers self-service BI that empowers business users by driving innovative decision-making. QlikView brings together data from multiple sources into a single application, and its dynamic apps can be optimized for mobile access. With QlikView, DWR was able to create an Area Manager Dashboard that was designed for iPad and built to display details regarding Area Managers’ specific businesses, including sales representatives, item sales and trends. IT can now push data out to users, which they can access on their iPads and immediately gain insights into the inventory in their studios. At a glance, the studio sales team can see every DWR product and access data that informs intelligent decisions for allocating and managing products.
Operational Impact
  • QlikView gives the DWR headquarters team insight into vendor activities with the Vendor Scorecard, which shows how a vendor is performing against certain data points.
  • The HQ team can see sales measured against returns, for example, to address issues with certain products before they turn into problems.
  • Daily sales reports that used to be created by finance manually from multiple data sources have been automated with QlikView, saving 2-3 hours of time every day.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Automated daily sales reports saving 2-3 hours of time every day.
