The Challenge
The retailer faced a visibility gap in some core segments in their data centers which had been upgraded to support high-speed traffic. They also wanted to reduce costs and vendor and tool clutter in their monitoring ecosystem. The retailer's IT staff during the pandemic was to evaluate the current state of their monitoring tools, consolidate for efficiencies in cost and operation where possible, and ensure gaps in visibility were addressed to maintain quality customer experience, both in store and online.
About The Customer
The customer is a multi-billion-dollar retailer with hundreds of stores throughout North America. They offer a broad range of products used in and around homes and businesses. Customer service is a top priority for this retailer, either in-store or online via their robust Web presence. Their thousands of employees rely heavily on digital technology for inventory management within the stores, as well as identifying products located in nearby stores or distribution warehouses. This has made the retailer’s extensive network and data centers mission-critical to their success. Disruptions can impact credit card authorization, customer order processing and management, as well as inventory status and updates. When digital services are disrupted, and it is noticeable to shoppers and customers, the impact to the retailer’s business can be significant – from both revenue and reputation perspectives.
The Solution
The retailer worked with NETSCOUT to devise a strategy to expand their current solution to gain visibility into their 40G data center circuits. They selected the ISNG 9800 and 4800 appliances, with ASI smart data technology, for specific areas of the data center to maintain the consistency in application performance, availability, reliability, and quality service delivery they required in the critical core of their network. The IT team also evaluated their packet broker strategy of deploying switches from two different vendors. They decided to include the nGenius 7100 series packet flow switch in their strategy. The 7100 series packet brokers provided a future-proof choice for the IT team, with support for higher-speed interfaces than currently in use, ability to provide active tapping for specific security use cases, and encryption and decryption capabilities.
Operational Impact
  • The retailer extended the value invested in their nGeniusONE solution and succeeded in filling gaps in their visibility to assure customer-impacting services with the addition of the new ISNG appliances in their high-speed core.
  • In selecting NETSCOUT for their packet broker technology, they achieved two goals of upgrading their packet monitoring and acquisition technology to take them into the future, while also simplifying their equipment and vendor support for their overall monitoring solutions.
  • This gave them confidence in interoperability between the two solutions that will ultimately reduce MTTR.
