The Challenge
The City of Round Rock faced several challenges in improving its VMware View experience, securing and controlling user data, and supporting streamlined and efficient citizen service delivery. A unique issue arose with the transition to virtual desktops, where users wanted to retain personalized settings like desktop wallpapers. This 'kitty cat wallpaper' problem led to resistance in fully utilizing VMware licenses. Additionally, the city needed a solution to provide seamless access to data across various devices and locations, as well as to reduce help desk tickets related to offline file synchronization.
About The Customer
The City of Round Rock, Texas, located 15 miles north of Austin, is the 31st largest city in Texas with a population of approximately 100,000. Major employers in the city include Dell, TECO-Westinghouse, Bass Pro Shops, and Hospira. The city maintains over 400 physical desktop machines and has deployed more than 350 virtual desktops using VMware View. The city government is committed to providing high-quality services to its citizens, who ultimately fund the technology investments. The personnel benefiting from these technologies work across various departments, including police, fire, parks and recreation, finance, and administration.
The Solution
To address the challenges, Round Rock deployed AppSense DesktopNow Plus, which allowed user personalized settings to move seamlessly between virtual desktops. This solution extended the value of the VMware View implementation and improved user experience by reducing logon times and help desk tickets related to offline file synchronization. Additionally, the city deployed AppSense DataNow to provide employees with greater access to data from any location, enabling simple, secure access, sync, and sharing of files without data migration or new storage. DataNow made storage locations like file servers and Microsoft SharePoint easily accessible from any device, maintaining a consistent Windows user experience.
Operational Impact
  • AppSense DesktopNow Plus allowed users to seamlessly move between physical and virtual desktops, improving user experience and reducing logon times.
  • The deployment of AppSense DataNow provided employees with greater access to data from any location, enabling simple, secure access, sync, and sharing of files.
  • The city reduced its desktop estate from over 800 machines to 400, as users embraced personalized virtual desktops.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Decreased time needed for system restores by 84%.
