The Challenge
The Dublin Port Tunnel, a €752m project and the largest civil engineering project in Ireland, required a comprehensive and fully integrated security management solution. The tunnel, which spans 5.6 km and acts as a link between Dublin Port and the national motorway network, needed a single security management system located at the main on-site control room to centrally monitor and control the entire tunnel. The goal was to create a safe facility and environment for tunnel users. The scale of the project necessitated a high-end security solution that incorporated CCTV, intruder alarms, intercoms, and central monitoring via a single Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

About The Customer
The customer in this case is the Dublin Port Tunnel, the largest ever civil engineering project in Ireland. The tunnel spans 5.6 km and acts as a link between Dublin Port and the national motorway network. It is one of the largest urban tunnels of its kind in Europe. The tunnel required a comprehensive and fully integrated security management solution to ensure a safe facility and environment for its users. The scale of the project necessitated a high-end security solution that incorporated various security systems, all centrally monitored and controlled from the main on-site control room.
The Solution
To meet the client's requirements, the highly secure CEM AC2000 SE (Standard Edition) access control system was chosen and installed by ADT Dublin. The AC2000 SE system provides the tunnel with advanced access control and integration with intruder alarms and a large central SCADA system. It controls access in and out of the tunnel’s “Plaza Toll Area” and vehicle gates with loop detectors for traffic monitoring. The system directly feeds access control and intruder alarm information into the central SCADA system, providing a single software solution and a central means of monitoring the entire tunnel site. When abnormal events or situations are detected, the AC2000 SE system transfers alarms to the central SCADA system, which is controlled and monitored 24/7 by tunnel operators. The system also includes distributed hardware intelligence using S9020 IP controllers with an internal database and customised software to meet the specific project requirements.
