The Challenge
Jersey Electricity, a vertically integrated power utility, is the sole supplier of electricity in Jersey, serving around 50,000 domestic and commercial customers. The utility was in the process of replacing traditional meters with smart meters that automatically transmit readings and interval data to 650 local data concentrators situated around the island, every three hours or on demand. The challenge was to automate the entire smart metering process, from data collection through to information publishing. The company wanted to provide its customers with accurate and timely information on energy usage from the new smart meters, thereby improving customer engagement.

About The Customer
Jersey Electricity is a vertically integrated power utility that deals in the importation, generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. It is the sole supplier of electricity in Jersey, serving around 50,000 domestic and commercial customers. Its non-energy businesses include retail, building services, IT, environmental engineering, and property. The company was looking to replace traditional meters with smart meters and automate the entire smart metering process, from data collection to information publishing, to improve customer engagement.
The Solution
To address this challenge, Jersey Electricity built a new data warehouse. The utility company used WhereScape® RED, a data automation software, to bring together data from a variety of sources, store more than one billion readings annually, refresh the data on a daily basis, and publish the data to a customer portal and Jersey Electricity departments. The software also helped in fully documenting the process. This solution not only automated the smart metering process but also improved customer engagement by providing customers with accurate information on their energy usage. The new data warehouse was developed, documented, and released in just 22 days, thanks to the WhereScape automation software.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the new data warehouse and the automation of the smart metering process has significantly improved the operational efficiency of Jersey Electricity. The company is now able to provide its customers with accurate and timely information on their energy usage, resulting in much higher levels of customer engagement. The automation software has also helped in fully documenting the process, ensuring transparency and accountability. The ability to bring together data from a variety of sources and publish it to a customer portal and various departments within the company has improved data accessibility and usability, thereby enhancing decision-making processes.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Developed, documented, and released the new data warehouse in just 22 days
