The Challenge
Publishers face a tough challenge. If they print more copies of a book than people buy, they waste money and are left with excess inventory. But if they print too few copies, they miss out on revenue. To avoid ending up with too many or too few books, media control has developed a state-of-the-art social media listening tool that helps publishers accurately predict demand for each title.
About The Customer
Based in the German town of Baden Baden, media control GmbH specializes in providing media information – such as data on television viewership, book sales, cinema visits and music charts – to its clients. The company wanted to attract trade from more companies in the publishing industry by helping them find smarter ways to run their businesses. One of the key ways for publishers to achieve greater profitability is by matching print volumes to sales.
The Solution
Working with PROFI Engineering Systems AG, an IBM Premier Business Partner, media control developed a sophisticated social media analysis tool built on cutting-edge IBM Watson Content Analytics with Enterprise Search software. To support the solution, PROFI Engineering Systems also helped media control deploy an IBM PureFlex System connected to an IBM Storwize V5000 storage device. The social media analysis tool continuously scans more than 100,000 websites, searching for relevant user comments and information about books, authors and publishing firms on online forums, blogs and news websites.
Operational Impact
  • The solution gives media control’s clients a huge advantage over their competitors by helping them maximize revenues and avoid waste.
  • The solution drives new revenues for media control.
  • The tool’s advanced search functionality allows media control to answer ad-hoc requests from publishers regarding the projected success of an individual book.
