The Challenge
Vitkovice Steel, a leading European manufacturer of rolled steel products, was faced with the challenge of replacing an outdated production monitoring system from the late 1980s. The company was also dealing with control systems based on obsolete Czechoslovakian computers (PPC-4). The need for a modern, efficient, and reliable system was paramount to ensure the smooth operation of the company's production processes. The challenge was to find a solution that could seamlessly integrate with existing systems, provide high availability, and meet the needs of about 180 users. The solution also needed to be able to handle the diverse user group that ranged from general plant and service personnel to developers, administrators, and supervisors.

Vitkovice Steel, a.s., a member of the Evraz Group S.A., is a leading European manufacturer of rolled steel products. The company’s main product mix consists of plates, sections, sheet piles, and flame-cut shapes. As the largest steel plate manufacturer in the Czech Republic, located in the city of Ostrava in the Moravia region, Vitkovice Steel produced 802,000 tons of steel products in 2005, mostly high-quality steel plates. The company has a diverse user group that ranges from general plant and service personnel and guests to developers, administrators, and supervisors.
The Solution
Vitkovice Steel, in collaboration with systems integrator Real Time Software, selected ICONICS GENESIS32™ OPC Web-enabled HMI/SCADA suite. This included the AlarmWorX™32 distributed, enterprise-wide alarm and events management system and DataWorX™32 OPC data aggregation, bridging, redundancy, and tunneling. The new Plate Mill Coordination System, “KSUP”, was gradually phased in, replacing the outdated management execution system and the control systems of key production aggregates. The GENESIS32 software suite was used for the automatic monitoring of material moving on roll-transporters as well as of material stored in piles. The system also automatically registered all the key parameters of individual production operations and stored them in the Oracle database. All alarm and event messages were posted and archived using AlarmWorX32.
