The Challenge
US Foods had grown through hundreds of acquisitions over decades. As a result, the company lacked an easily adaptable IT infrastructure. Information was uncoordinated across systems. Its 63 branches acted autonomously using different business processes. This resulted in inaccurate pricing, manual processes, inconsistent data and a lack of visibility across divisions.
About The Customer
US Foods, America’s 10th largest private company, is one of the country’s most innovative food companies and leading distributors. The company offers more than 350,000 national brand products and its own highquality items, ranging from fresh meats to frozen foods. Its more than 250,000 customers are restaurants, healthcare and hospitality entities, government and educational institutions. US Foods employs around 25,000 people in 60+ locations and has more than $20 billion in annual revenue.
The Solution
US Foods now has a healthy appetite for Business Process Management (BPM). Using BPM, US Foods has minimized manual processes, gained more process control and greater process visibility. Specifically for its Credit Debit Memo Request (CDMR) approval process, US Foods uses webMethods BPMS to eliminate manual data entry into siloed systems, track refund status and measure results via real-time metrics. With the assistance of Software AG consultants, the solution was live in only three months. The BPM solution works with existing platforms and integrates all relevant systems, including a Tandem mainframe, Oracle® PeopleSoft Human Capital Management and security applications. US Foods can continue to adapt the process by further streamlining or simplifying interactions.
Operational Impact
  • BPM puts US Foods closer to its goal of becoming the easiest company to do business with in the industry through business process excellence. The new CDMR process, in particular, gives US Foods one solution for all divisions with a standard, friendly interface for all users, from sales to financial staff. The company can ensure it meets customer goals and demands by monitoring service level agreements.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Savings of at least $1 million are expected in Year One due to improved productivity, automation, integration and an end-to-end integration framework that enables re-usability.
